He joined the United States Army in 1999 with the goal of supporting his family and creating opportunities for his future. Life-Altering Accident & Recovery

In 2011, Smith was involved in a catastrophic motorcycle accident in Nashville, Tennessee, when he was struck by a distracted driver. The collision resulted in the loss of his right arm above the elbow and put his life and military career at risk. Doctors told him he might never compete again.

Following the accident, Smith endured extensive surgeries and medical setbacks, including kidney failure, and spent two years in intense rehabilitation.

Despite these challenges, Smith fought to return to active duty, defying precedent. He became the first above-the-elbow amputee in U.S. Army history to receive a “fit for duty” determination and continue active-duty service.

Transition to Adaptive Sports & World Class Athlete Program

As part of his recovery and pursuit of purpose, Smith embraced adaptive sports. His athletic journey includes cycling, swimming, track, multisport events, and participation in elite competitive environments. He was selected for the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), a unit dedicated to supporting Soldier-athletes in Olympic and Paralympic training and competition.

During his tenure with WCAP, Smith competed in Para-triathlon at national levels and trained with elite adaptive sport communities. He also achieved recognition within the endurance community for events such as Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races.

In 2020, Smith was named man of the year by U.S.A. Triathlon while representing the Army WCAP, an honor recognizing his athletic performance and leadership. He was the first active-duty service member to receive this accolade.
